Often, many of us find ourselves in a place where we feel we aren’t making a direct impact. If you work for a big company, it can be easy to lose sight of how your efforts affect others. While eventually our work might be able to help on a larger scale, sometimes, as humans, it’s important to see the immediate benefits of our labor. One of the greatest and more immediately beneficial ways to see the benefit of your efforts is community service. You’ll find that there is never a shortage of demand for a helping hand in your community. Here are just some of the ways you can help make an immediate difference:

In Your Community:

1. Create care packages for a local homeless shelter
2. Volunteer at an animal shelter
3. Organize a group to write letters of support to battered women’s shelters
4. Help elderly neighbors with outdoor labor
5. Organize a drive to collect clothes for needy children

For the Environment:

1. Organize an energy consumption awareness campaign with your HOA
2. Plant a tree
3. Create a neighborhood garden
4. Encourage friends and neighbors to use reusable bags instead of plastic bags
5. Organize a clean-up crew to meet once a week

For Local Hospitals:

1. Partner with a local school and write letters of encouragement to sick children
2. Visit and chat with seniors in the hospital
3. Organize a teddy bear drive and send bears to a local hospital
4. Volunteer at a maternity ward
5. Get your canine friend certified to be a therapy dog and visit local hospitals

To help animals:

1. Set up hummingbird feeders around your home and neighboring homes (with permission)
2. Raise awareness for spaying and neutering pets in your neighborhood
3. If it’s possible for you, become an animal foster parent
4. Volunteer to walk dogs at local shelters
5. Plan a food and toy drive and donate to an animal shelter
