Rewarding Good Behavior at the End of the Year

by | Dec 18, 2014 | 0 comments

The end of the year is a time of reflection for many. From our accomplishments to our downfalls, the end of the year signifies new beginnings and the end of old chapters. For many of us adults, a year may not change us much as a person, but for kids in the process of learning and absorbing new experiences a year can bring a great deal of change. As parents, this is a time in which we reflect on our kids’ improvements and hopefully reward them for their hard work in school, at home and overall good behavior.

While the end of the calendar year isn’t necessarily the end of the school year, it marks the end of the semester or halfway point for students. This is the perfect time for the extra reinforcement and the boost rewards can give kids. Many times as parents, it’s easy to forget that kids need the occasional pat in the back.

A great way to reward kids in a personalized and special way is with plaques and certificates. Kids love the personal value of receiving something made just for them to recognize their hard work.

Some other great ways to reward kids are:

–          Dinners

–          Extra game time

–          Gatherings with friends

–          New freedom

–          A visit to their favorite ice cream shop

–          Good behavior “end of the year bonuses”

This is a great time to talk with your kids about what worked well and what they could improve on. If they had a great academic semester but could improve by helping around the house, this is a great time to let them know. An important part of asking for improvement is creating positive reinforcement and recognizing their successes.

At the end of the day, kids just need to be reminded that they’re on the right path toward becoming good adults. With the many influences they face regularly, it goes a long way to remind them which ones are the best for them.
